Small Dog Breeds
American Eskimo Dog
The American Eskimo Dog Comes in 3 Sizes
There are three versions of the American Eskimo Dog, the Toy, the Miniature and the Standard. Apart from
the differences in size, they are all the same breed and have all the same characteristics. In appearance, the
"Eskie" bears a strong resemblance to the Samoyed and the Japanese Spitz. This is not surprising, because this
breed originated in Northern Europe, from the German Spitz, which is how it was originally known.

In the early part of the 20th century, there was strong anti-German feeling in England and the United
States, about the time of World War 1 and the breed was re-named The American Eskimo Dog. A
similar thing happened with the German Shepherd, during the both World Wars, when it was known as the
Alsatian.
The Toy American Eskimo dog is about fourteen inches tall, at the shoulder and weighs about fifteen pounds. The
larger varieties of the breed were originally bred to guard people and property and, therefore, is very territorial
by nature and an excellent watchdog.
In general the breed is very intelligent and adaptable and achieved fame and recognition, between the two World
Wars, by performing in circuses across the United States.
Grooming The American Eskimo Dog. The American Eskimo Dog
has a high maintenance coat. As this breed was originally bred in northern Europe, it has a dense double coat
consists of a short, thick undercoat, with longer guard hairs forming an outer coat. It is beautiful but
it requires constant attention. This dog is a very high shedder and it may be necessary to brush
him virtually every day, to remove the loose hair and dispose of it, otherwise it will be everywhere in your
home"
Exercise For The American Eskimo Dog.
This dog, in whichever size, is an energetic, athletic individual and needs lots of exercise and
stimulation. However, being only a toy dog, his needs can be met with games indoors and a short walk outdoors. His
ability to perform circus tricks shows that he loves to have problems to solve.
Training The American Eskimo Dog.
The American Eskimo Dog is ranked high for intelligence and trainability. He is within
the top 40 of all dog breeds and is included in the group "above average working dogs" and has good
understanding of new commands. He is an excellent and enthusiastic competition performer in obedience
training, tricks, agility, conformation, and other dog sports. He is best with constant new stimulation and
challenges. He does have an independent nature, so his training needs to be firm and, above all,
interesting.

Temperament of The American Eskimo Dog.
This little dog is a devoted, loving companion who craves lots of attention and stimulation. The
larger varieties of this breed were originally bred to protect livestock, people and property so he is an excellent
watchdog and has ambitions to be a guard dog but he is really too small to back it up. He is a good playmate for
children but they must appreciate that he is a small dog a nd not very robust.
Possibly because he sheds hair so profusely, the American Eskimo Dog is not particularly popular in
the USA, being ranked only 114th in the 2010 registrations for the American Kennel Club
