Small Dog Breeds
Boston Terrier
The Boston Terrier is "The American Gentleman"
The Boston Terrier was first bred in America and originated in the city of Boston. He was bred
from English stock, as a cross between an English Bulldog and an English Terrier, in the latter part of the
nineteenth century. He was developed after the Civil War as a fighting dog but over time, this instinct was
deliberately reduced, to make him a more friendly companion. He has been included in the
Non-Sporting Breed of the American Kennel Club for over 100 years
The Boston Terrier is a solidly built small dog, as you would expect as a descentant of the Bulldog. He stands
about sixteen inches tall, at the shoulder, and weighs between twelve and twenty-five pounds.
Out of the 157 breeds recognized by the American Kennel
Club he is very popular, being ranked at 20th in the breed registrations received by the club in the
year 2010
The Boston Terrier is not classified as a terrier, either by the American Kennel Club or the Kennel Club in
Britain. He does not exhibit any of the normal traits of the terrier group, so he is not exciteable or overly
energetic, nor is he aggressive.
Indeed, he is gentle and affectionate, hence his nickname "The American Gentleman"
Grooming The Boston Terrier
The Boston Terrier's coat is short and compact and it requires only occasional brushing to
keep it in good condition. However, he sheds hair moderately, so you may find it preferable
to brush him regularly, to remove the loose hair and dispose of it before it gets all through the house. There is
normally no need for professional dog grooming with this little fellow.
Exercise For The Boston Terrier
As mentioned before, the Boston Terrier is not a true terrier breed, so he does not have the
high energy and work drive that they have. He only needs a moderate amount of exercise and while most of that
can be achieved in the home, he does appreciate a daily leashed walk, or a chance to play in a secure, enclosed
area.
Training The Boston Terrier
The Boston Terrier is of average intelligence, being ranked joint 54th, out of
79 groups. In the research conducted by Dr Stanley Coren, he is of "average working/obedience intelligence, with
average understanding of new commands". He is normally eager to please but he can be stubborn and patience is
needed to get him to do what you want. The Boston Terrier is difficult to housetrain.
The Boston Terrier's Temperament
The Boston Terrier is an ideal companion dog. He is affectionate and friendly and loves to be
with his family. He is gentle and protective with children and good with other pets but like most small dogs, he
does not like rough handling and play. He is a little reserved but usually sociable and well-behaved with
visitors. He is a very good watchdog, because he will bark to alert you of the approach of strangers, although
he doesn't bark unnecessarily. He has bulldog breeding in him and he is inclined to drool.
