Small Dog Breeds
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a Very Popular Dog
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a much-loved dog on both sides of the Atlantic. In Britain,
he was rated 7th most popular dog breed and in America he was 23rd. Both these rankings were based on
breed registrations to the respective Kennel Clubs during the year of 2010.
He is indubitably a spaniel but because of his diminutive size, he is placed in the Toy Dogs category in both
the American Kennel Club and the Kennel
Club UK
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has always been popular in Britain but his popularity has increased
dramatically in the United States, over the last ten years or so. He is also extremely popular in Australia.
He stands about thirteen inches tall, at the shoulder and weighs between thirteen and eighteen pounds.
This little dog is everybody's friend, adults, children and other dogs, large or small. However,
spaniels of all sizes are bred to hunt and retrieve small birds and game, so he may pursue small pets
such as hamsters and gerbils.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was first bred in England, hundreds of years ago and was the favored pet of
the aristocracy, hence his name.
Grooming The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
This breed has a silky coat that comes in four distinct color schemes – Blenheim (chestnut and white),
Tricolor (black, white, and tan), Ruby (solid red) and Black and Tan. The one you see here is Black and Tan. The
chestnut and white variety was first bred by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, who lived at Blenheim Palace,
hence the name Blenheim.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will shed hair moderately. Although his coat only needs
occasional brushing to keep it in good condition you may find it preferable to brush him daily, in a place where
you can collect the loose hair and dispose of it. Five or ten minutes brushing equals less vacuuming.
Exercising The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
He is a spaniel, so that means he was bred as a working dog and will always love a walk or a romp
in the yard. He is such an adaptable and amenable little dog that he can be equally contented to lie with you and
enjoy a cuddle. His calm and sociable nature makes him a very effective therapy dog
Training The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Although The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is classed as a Toy dog, he comes from a long line of
Sporting Dogs (known as Gundogs in the United Kingdom) and all these breeds, such as retrievers, spaniels, setters
and pointers are highly trainable, as they have to be instantly obedient in the field.
He is quite an intelligent dog, being ranked joint 44th out of 79 breed groups by Dr Stanley Coren,
who has carried out considerable research in this field. He is described as having "average working/obedience
intelligence and understanding of new commands". He responds very well to sensitive, patient training
and excels in obedience and agility competitions.
