Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a Herder

And That Means He's Very Smart Indeed!

As a group, the herding dogs are some of the most intelligent in the world. The Border Collie, The German Shepherd, The Shetland Sheepdog, The Australian Cattle Dog and The Pembroke Welsh Corgi are all in the top twelve most intelligent breeds, as researched by Dr Stanley Coren.

Centuries of breeding have gone into developing the high degree of intelligence which is common to most of the Herding Group. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is ranked the 11th most intelligent breed in the world. They are described as "excellent working dogs, with outstanding understanding of new commands".

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi originated in Wales many centuries ago. It is believed that they were brought over by Flemish weavers in the twelfth century and developed as farm dogs, with great aptitude for herding cattle, sheep, geese and chickens. The herding instinct is very strong and he will attempt to herd people as well!

Here you have a dog that is easily trainable, devoted to his family, protective and an excellent watchdog. He stands about eleven inches tall, at the shoulder but he weighs between twenty -four and thirty pounds.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has been a favorite pet of the British Royal family for many years and Queen Elizabeth currently owns five. He is also very popular in America, being ranked 27th out of 157 breeds which were registered by The American Kennel Club in the year 2010.

Grooming The Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a double coat, consisting of a medium-length outer coat and a short, thick undercoat, which sheds copiously. He also "blows" his coat twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. The Corgi does not need much maintenance to keep his coat in good condition, an occasional brushing is all that is required. Some owners prefer to brush him daily and then collect the hair and dispose of it before it gets on carpets and furnishings. (I expect the Queen has someone who does it for her!).

Exercise & Training For The Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a working dog, so he needs exercise and mental stimulation, to stop him getting bored and overweight. A regular, long daily walk, on a leash, is the minimum that's required. If you can incorporate some training routine into his walk, you will both get more out of it.

With his high intelligence and strong work ethic, he excels at herding, obedience and agility competitions. Some part of his daily routine should include a variation on training, even if it is only for fifteen minutes. If it involves running about as well, so much the better. This is not a dog who wants to lie about the house all day.

 The Pembroke Welsh Corgi's Temperament

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a devoted companion who just loves to be involved with everything you do. He is very protective of his home and family, especially the children and is an excellent watchdog and guard dog. He may be inclined to contiue barking after he has raised the alarm, in which case, this will be part of his training.
